Sri Gita Govindam, popularly known as Ashtapadhi is a Maha Kaavyam (great work) of Sri Jeyadeva Swamigal. Ashtapadhi is the heart of Dhakshina Sampradhaya Bhajan. Sri Gita Govindam is comprised of 12 chapters and 24 songs. Each song consists of eight couplets and hence called Ashtapadhi. This epic composed by Sri Jeyadeva Swamigal in 12th century AD is the only epic fully blessed by Lord Sri Krishna since Sri Krishna Himself wrote a couplet smara garala kandanam in 19th Ashtapadhi.
This unparalleled poetic Sanskrit epic expresses a gopi by name Radha’s Bhakthi to Sri Krishna in the greatest form of 9 types of bhakthi (Nava vidha Bhakthi) prema bhakthi. This great epic, which is an embodiment of eternal love and supreme devotion, elucidates the spiritual unity of Radha, a Jeevathma (living being) longing to unite with Paramathma (God) Sri Krishna and Radha’s friend plays the role of a Guru guiding the way for unity.
